How to Apply Wall Decals
Wall decals are one of our favorite ways to add color and interest to a room. They’re low-commitment, hi-impact and can even be used on furniture or other flat, smooth surfaces. Here are a few tips on how to get ‘em up and lookin’ good.
1. Make sure you walls are clean and dry. Wipe them down with a cloth to remove any dust and particles from the surface.
2. Measure- twice! Most decals are removable and reusable so there is some flexibility in moving them around. However, getting them on correctly the first time is the goal. You’ll want to use a pencil, tape measure and perhaps even a level to make sure your decals aren’t crooked. We suggest marking the corners of your decal on the wall as well as the center points.
3. Once you’ve made your marks it’s time to actually apply the decals. No matter what material the decal is made from- paper or vinyl -you’re going to want to take your time. We suggest using one hand to press the decal to the wall, walking your fingers bit by bit down the decal, while you slowly pull the paper backing away. **Pulling the backing straight down along the wall towards the floor rather than out to the center of the room or towards you will also help prevent the decals from getting pulled off the wall during the application process.
4. Look for air bubbles. If you took your time applying the decals you shouldn’t have any- but no ones perfect! If you find an air bubble under the decal don’t panic. And wait before you start cursing and unpeeling the decal! Most air bubbles can be remedied by carefully poking a hole with a safety pin or making a very small slice with a razor blade and then pushing the trapped air out with your fingers.
5. Lastly, for larger decals you may want to grab a friend for an extra set of hands.
